Mr. Mark Peterson Dear Editor: State Representative Peggy Mast has an outstanding record of supporting taxpayers on fiscal issues during her service in the Kansas House of Representatives. Rep. Mast's lifetime rating on the Kansas Taxpayers Network's (see:www.kansastaxpayers.com for individual year's scorecards) fiscal scorecard is 96.4 percent. Her steadfast opposition to tax hikes and support for fiscally responsible state spending are key aspects of her excellent record at the Kansas statehouse. Allegations that Rep. Mast supports raising property taxes are inaccurate and odious. Rep. Mast strongly opposed Governor Sebelius' 2004 proposal to raise property, income, and sales taxes. Rep. Mast has fought whenever possible to protect Kansans from free spending activist judges and the entire left wing litigation agenda that has used the courts to dramatically raise Kansas spending on public schools without improving educational performance. Allegations have been made that Rep. Mast supported a tax hike. This is inaccurate. Rep. Mast did propose, as part of a parliamentary maneuver to force an up-or-down vote, the $1 billion spending spree that was contained within the judicial evaluation of the Augenblick & Myer school spending study. Mast forthrightly brought this issue in front of the entire Kansas house and she voted against this fiscally irresponsible proposal. Every member had the chance to vote for or against this issue. Rep. Mast, has always stood by her promise not to raise Kansas taxes. I wish there were 164 other legislators at the Kansas statehouse like Rep. Mast.
